1&1 - Editor Review
The Good: Great value for money especially for domain registration; Outstanding set of pre-installed features compared to other providers in its class; The Bad: Slow and unusable outsourced customer support; Reported billing issues that includes difficulties to cancel the account, suspending of accounts with no warning, double billing, unauthorized charges and no payment of promised refunds The Bottom Line: 1&1 is a good option if price is important and support are not but you need luck to do not have a billing issue.

1&1 is a capable, midrange hosting line that can be managed to
please almost anyone--newbies, personal pages or expert webmasters. With
plans starting at $3.99/mo, it offers more features than almost all its
competitors. The $3.99/mo basic plan includes a Private Domain
Registration, 10 MySQL databases, DNS Management, URL Masking, Spam
Filter, WebsiteBuilder, DynamicSiteCreator, Photo Gallery, FrontPage
Server Extensions, Marketing Vouchers (Microsoft adCenter, Google
AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing), Easy RSS, Daily Backup, etc. So unless
you have a very big site, the basic plan may be enough for you or your
business. But 1&1's only advantage is the fact has a price plan for all
its features as its customer support is not the best of the industry.
We admit we had worries concerning 1&1 reliability after a few users
reporting downtimes some time ago. After testing, our opinion
brightened - but as soon we compared it to similarly cheap competitors, we
became less optimistic. As a cheap line hosting plan, 1&1 is still good
if price is important but once we considered its customer support
issues, we became less excited by the 1&1's overall value.
As we expected, the overall 1&1 customer support performance of our
test was unimpressive. Don't try to send complex queries to 1&1's
support staff: its outsourced support in Philippines will ignore it and will not reply you.
1&1's biggest issue is its billing policy; They frequently are charging some of its users for services
that they didn't provide or double charge for what they really have
provided. 1&1 is a respectable company with a big name offering a good
cost-benefit service but that poor support and frequent billing issues
combination means that you can be in trouble one day if you see yourself
on a dispute as 1&1 has a policy to sue unpaid services.
The main reason we're giving 1&1 a chance here is because of what
you get for the price. For 1&1, you get a 10 GB disk space and
data transfer of 300 GB. You also get tons of pre-installed features
as mentioned. Virtually every other hosting plan would charge you some
more for a similar configuration.
Among the 1&1's features, it offers the full range of
expected tools on its custom control panel.
Both features and billing can be managed with a single login.

Very nice hosting
Rating 9 out of 10
Recommends: Yes
Pros: nice support and stable.
Cons: the backups requested are normally a bit old.
You may not agree with me but I host my server on 1and1 for the last 2 years and never had a problem with them.
I manage my server myself, They have very nice features for who like to unmanaged servers like me.
I know that a lot of people are not dissatisfied with 1and1 as I noticed on user reviews - They support is not perfect in communicating with customers but they are very useful.
I had some serious problem that my incompetence was the only responsible, and they managed to help me in high priority even 1and1 had no responsibility over the issue.
The only problem I noticed is that when you request a backup, it a bit older compared to what it should be (they claim to make a backup every day, but everytime is a bit older than this)

Amazing email hosting service
Rating 9 out of 10
Recommends: Yes
Pros: perfect email service
Cons: email size limited to 10 Mega
I have been around with 1&1 for a couple of years. They have a very good reputation in their hosting services and are very professional in what they do. They do not only host site but they also provide professional email services. They provide Webmail/SMTP/IMAP/POP mail services with tons of disk space. The only limitation is the 10MB per attachment, but this will not hit most of the users

Good experience with 1&1 (uk)
Rating 8 out of 10
Recommends: Yes
Pros: nice support, reliable and nice price
Cons: transfer price is not the best.
I started 1&1 about 6 months ago and until now my experience with them is very good: Had absolutely no problem. The setup was very easy, had no problem with billing, support, uptime... (like a lot here had). I don't know if it is due I'm using their uk fellows instead of the US one. They also offer a very robust dedicated that is hard to find nowadays. The only problem is that if you need a huge bandwidth, it will not work for you (expensive)

not the best, but it worth
Rating 7 out of 10
Recommends: Yes
Pros: nice support
Cons: are not the #1
I'm a 1&1 customer for the last 4 years, they are not the best but I've had a nice experience with them.
Their support team are very useful and solved quickly all problems that I had until now.
I saw a lot of bad reviews about 1&1, but I think that most of them are from free plans.
Is impressive how a small business can be so fantastic - I know that they are not the number one in web hosting business but has a nice cost benefit.

I Love 1&1
Rating 7 out of 10
Recommends: Yes
Pros: price
Cons: no one
I love 1&1. They are always very friendly (I do not use too much support) but every time I needed them, I've got a good support by phone. Yes, sometimes it a take a long time for an operator to answer but this may vary. They have a good price too; I get a nice package for only $6 that includes a very good Site Builder. Before me sign up to 1&1, I tested several web hosting companies (using the 30-day-back stuff) and after a lot of research I'm sure that I got a perfect web hosting company.

Nice host, but is not so good.
Rating 6 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: Cheap; Stable and has a nice interface
Cons: See below
There are about 30 months that I host my business site with 1 and 1. I have 3 customers that host with them as well.
When these customers recommended 1 and 1 for me they were right: it is cheap and has a very good uptime (Nice uptime is rare in web hosting business, even for those who claim that has a good 99.9% uptime). So I became seduced and joined 1 and 1.
After some months I saw a lot of reviews from people someone claims that has been sued by 1 and 1 due payment issues. ~ I became scared, and 1 week latter, I got a email telling that my account has violated TOS and they were going to close it ~they didn't tell why but after some talk I discover that my credit card has been refused (?) and after it I manage to solve the problem.
Now things are ok but I don't agree that they should become so violent about this, they could just contact me and not send a mail like that.
They are stable but I don't recommend 1 and 1.

1 and 1
Rating 6 out of 10
Recommends: Yes
Pros: price
Cons: crap support and 1982 hardware :-)
I host my dedicated server with 1&1, their support is bad and they save while buying their hardware but the price is the minimum and this is how I live there.

e-mail problems
Rating 6 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: price
Cons: email sucks
I'm hosting my site with 1&1 for the last year, they are great but the problem surely is the email service: web mail is completely slow (take minutes to show just an email), you have horrendous delays while sending (and receiving ) messages. Probably they are using a single mail server for a lot of his customers and the server is probably unable to handle all these customers mails requests in time. But I have talked with other customers and most of them are not having the same problem I have. I already tried to contact support to solve this issue but no success until now. My only option now is to move around top a new web hosting company.

You'll get a good service only if you pay a lot
Rating 5 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: Control Panel
Cons: speed (slow) and customer service (poor)
While hosting our customers’ web sites on 1&1, we experienced a lot of problems that made me regret to host there. They major issue is regarding access speed, database access speed, images poor loading time and so (but no downtime problems). While contacting poor support that they have, they suggested me to upgrade my hosting plan to something more expensive and they got me (when you are in panic to make things working, you believe everything). Problem solved but we noticed that other hosts has the same service for a very small price so we decided to move out from 1&1.

Overloaded
Rating 5 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: support is great
Cons: overloaded and own control pannel
I hosted my e-commerce site with 1&1 a few years ago. I left them due their annoying control panel (they run a custom control panel, stay away from this) but I'm not sure how it is now. It was very sad due I liked their support staff - was very friendly. Recently a friend of mine told me that their servers are overloaded and everything is slow now, I would not recommend them.

non US domain, not supported
Rating 4 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: -
Cons: ftp problems and EU domains not supported
I'm using 1&1 for the last year, I'm hosting a domain from EU but I host my site using 1&1 Usa. On the last few months I began to have problems with ftp reliability: extremely slow to upload, connection timeouts and to many corrupted files hitting the server disks. When I contact support, they refuse to solve my problem and tell that the problem is the domain country that I'm using - WTF?

Finally they found my payment
Rating 4 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: price
Cons: mess, no support.
I just sign up with 1&1 about 2 weeks ago and finally they found my payment, now I can run my website - Its really funny when you call customer support and customer support asks you to call billing guys and so billing guys ask you to call back customer support and them they asked me to call my credit card company (my bank) - don't go to 1&1

nice email hosting but poor suport
Rating 4 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: great email
Cons: terrible support
A friend of mine told me about e-mail hosting over 1&1 and so I decided to move there due I was needing some advanced outlook service that only they would provide. But who runs a hosting email services knows that support is essential (it is more essential compared when you run a pure web hosting service) - and this is the 1&1 problem.
We were lucky as we do not had any (billing) problems getting out from 1&1 as HM guys here states, but 1&1 support has a lot of flaws.

completely down again
Rating 3 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: price
Cons: down every time
Again all my dedicateds went down, here is what they say:
"A very few number of 1&1 dedicated servers customers experienced a reduced performance this afternoon due to an internal network issue. For the majority of the dedicated servers, this issue was rectified and performance returned to normal within a few minutes.
We confirm that all affected dedicated servers are now restored to regular performance and we apologies to any customers inconvenienced"
And also their support lines went down as I could not contact them. I'm afraid to get out and ask a refund as a friend of mine took 1 year to get a refund -- stay alway from this company.

ilegal billing
Rating 3 out of 10
Recommends: No
Pros: price
Cons: billing and ilegal issues
I my site with 1&1 and now I'm having some problems with them: my credit card got declined and they simply stole my domain registration and sent the bill to a collection agency. This is illegal - could no find someone that had the same problem as I have. But I'm planning to sue them for that.
